20” x 20” Pen on paper

In the Palimpsest (the role of a mark) series, I make rows of small marks with a pen on paper. I use five to seven pens of different colors for each drawing, and the drawing is only complete after each pen runs out of ink. I fill the page with rows of marks, and I rotate the page 90 degrees after completing a layer of marks with one pen and begin another layer with the next pen. Alone, the mark is inconsequential, its role unclear. Collectively, the marks make up a system. The mark-making occupies my body with a mundane task, allowing my mind to freely wander. The marks record the passage of time.
